Training program takes aim at skills gap

Canada’s Ontario province has rolled out an innovative training program to help jobseekers prepare for the manufacturing jobs of tomorrow.

Last week, Deb Matthews, Deputy Premier and Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development, announced that the province would invest in the Connect2SKILLS program, which combines academic and on-the-job training.

“Ensuring that our workforce is highly skilled is one of the most important things our government can do for people in Ontario, but government can’t do this alone,” Matthews said.

“Four County Labour Market Planning Board, Conestoga College and their community, employer and municipal partners are setting a great example for innovative cooperation to tackle a labour shortage in the manufacturing sector.”

Matthews added the partnership would provide local jobseekers with skills that “match exactly what employers in Perth County are looking for.”

The Ontario Government will provide Four County Labour Market Planning Board with $799,980 over two years to pilot the program.

The program will help more jobseekers access the training and skills they need to pursue employment and educational goals in what is a rapidly shifting economy.

The new project in Perth County is one of four SkillsAdvance pilots in Ontario that combine tailored employment supports for jobseekers with industry-specific skills training.

In March, Canada’s government revealed plans to future-proof the country’s workforce after its Finance Minister, Bill Morneau, tabled the annual budget.

“As we create the jobs of tomorrow, we will support a culture of lifelong learning and skills training to help workers and their families adapt to the changing demands of our time,” said Morneau.
